Star Wars game cancelled as EA cuts 670 jobs
Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that it is cancelling an upcoming Star Wars game and cutting 670 jobs in response to a decline in profits. The game, code-named “Orca,” was reportedly in development at EA Vancouver.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson stated that the decision to cancel the game was a difficult one, but necessary in order to refocus the company’s efforts and resources. He also expressed his gratitude to the employees who were affected by the layoffs.
Following the announcement, EA’s stock price fell by 13%, reflecting investor concerns about the company’s financial outlook. The layoffs represent approximately 11% of EA’s total workforce.
Despite the setback, EA remains committed to its other Star Wars projects, including the popular Star Wars: Battlefront series. The company also recently signed a deal with Disney to develop new Star Wars games in the future.
However, the cancellation of “Orca” serves as a reminder of the challenges facing the video game industry, as companies grapple with rising development costs, changing consumer preferences, and increased competition from other entertainment mediums.
