The tree-planting mayor of Freetown
Meet the inspiring mayor of Freetown, Sierra Leone, who is on a mission to make her city greener and more sustainable through a massive tree-planting campaign.
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr took office in 2018 and immediately set out to tackle the city’s pollution and deforestation problems. She launched the “Freetown the Tree Town” initiative, aiming to plant one million trees in the city within four years.
Under her leadership, thousands of trees have already been planted in parks, streets, and public spaces across Freetown. The mayor has also implemented policies to protect existing green spaces and promote sustainable land management practices.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s efforts have not only beautified the city but also had a positive impact on the environment and the quality of life for its residents. Trees help to reduce air pollution, mitigate climate change, and provide shade and cooling in urban areas.
Thanks to her dedication and vision, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr has been recognized as a leader in the global fight against climate change. She continues to inspire others to take action and work towards a more sustainable future for all.
