Star Wars game cancelled as EA cuts 670 jobs
Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that they are cancelling the highly anticipated open-world Star Wars game that was in development, as part of a restructuring effort that will result in 670 job cuts.
The game, which was being developed by EA’s Vancouver-based studio, was said to be one of the most ambitious projects in the company’s history. However, EA has decided to shift its focus towards smaller, more streamlined projects in order to be more agile and responsive to market changes.
This decision comes after a challenging year for EA, which saw the underperformance of some of its key titles and a backlash from fans over microtransactions and loot boxes in games like Star Wars Battlefront II.
The job cuts will primarily affect the company’s marketing, publishing, and operations teams, with EA stating that they are offering severance packages and job placement assistance to those affected.
EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, stated in a press release: “We are deeply saddened by the impact this will have on our colleagues, and we are committed to supporting them through this difficult time. We remain fully dedicated to creating amazing games and experiences, and we are confident that these changes will enable us to better achieve that goal.”
