Zuma ally quits South Africa’s governing ANC
One of former South African President Jacob Zuma’s key allies has announced his resignation from the country’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC).
Mr. Ace Magashule, who served as the ANC’s Secretary-General, has been facing corruption charges and had been suspended by the party earlier this year. His resignation comes amid internal divisions within the ANC and calls for cleaner governance.
The move is seen as a blow to the faction loyal to Mr. Zuma, who was forced to resign as President in 2018 following a series of corruption scandals. Mr. Magashule’s departure is expected to further shake up the political landscape in South Africa.
The ANC, which has been in power since the end of apartheid in 1994, is facing growing disillusionment among voters over issues such as corruption and economic inequality. The resignation of Mr. Magashule is likely to add to the challenges facing the party ahead of the next general elections.
