Scargill marks 40th anniversary of miners’ strike
Arthur Scargill, former leader of the National Union of Mineworkers, marked the 40th anniversary of the miners’ strike by giving a speech at a commemorative event.
The miners’ strike, which began in 1984 and lasted for a year, was a bitter and divisive industrial dispute that saw thousands of miners out of work and communities torn apart.
Scargill, who was at the forefront of the strike, reflected on the impact it had on miners and their families, and the enduring legacy of the strike in the fight for workers’ rights.
“The miners’ strike was a defining moment in British history, and it is important that we remember and commemorate the sacrifices made by miners and their families during that time,” Scargill said in his speech.
He also called for continued solidarity and support for workers’ rights, emphasizing the ongoing struggles faced by workers in the current political and economic climate.
