Power cut to Ghana’s parliament over $1.8m debt
Electricity supply to Ghana’s parliament has been cut off due to unpaid bills amounting to $1.8 million. The power cut has forced lawmakers to hold sessions in the dark and with the use of generators.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) issued a statement saying that the parliament building has been disconnected from the national grid due to the outstanding debt. The parliament has reportedly been given a deadline to settle the bill or face further action.
This is not the first time that Ghana’s parliament has faced power cuts due to unpaid bills. In 2016, the building was also disconnected from the grid over a similar issue.
The power cut to Ghana’s parliament highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the country in maintaining a reliable electricity supply and in managing its finances effectively. It also raises questions about the accountability of the country’s lawmakers in ensuring that bills are paid on time.
