The tree-planting mayor of Freetown
Meet the mayor of Freetown, Sierra Leone – a city that has been transformed by her passion for planting trees.
Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr took office in 2018 with a vision to make Freetown a greener and more sustainable city. She launched the “Greening Freetown” initiative, which aims to plant one million trees across the city by 2022.
Under her leadership, thousands of trees have already been planted in parks, schools, and along streets. These trees not only beautify the city, but also provide shade, clean the air, and help mitigate the effects of climate change.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s tree-planting efforts have inspired residents to take pride in their city and to do their part in protecting the environment. Her commitment to sustainability has earned her recognition both locally and internationally.
Thanks to Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s dedication, Freetown is now known as the “tree-planting mayor” – a title she wears with pride as she continues to lead the city towards a greener future.
