Moroccan IS militants sentenced to death in Somalia
On Monday, a Somali military court sentenced two Moroccan men to death for their involvement with the Islamic State group in Somalia.
The militants were identified as Ahmed Muhamed and Youssef Goulet, who were captured during a raid on an IS hideout in the northeastern region of Puntland.
The court found them guilty of carrying out terrorist attacks and recruiting fighters for the extremist group.
According to authorities, the two Moroccans had been operating in Somalia for several years and were responsible for numerous attacks on civilians and security forces.
Somalia has been grappling with a persistent threat from Islamic militants, including IS and al-Shabab, who have carried out deadly attacks across the country.
The sentencing of the Moroccan militants comes as a significant blow to IS’s presence in Somalia and serves as a warning to other foreign fighters operating in the region.
It is hoped that the harsh punishment will deter others from joining extremist groups and help to bring stability and security to the war-torn country.
